Find out more about crowns and when they might be right for you.
These tooth-shaped restorations are more popular than you might think. That’s because they are pretty versatile and offer a variety of benefits that you may not have even known about. Our Billerica, MA, dentist Dr. Kunio Chan is here to tell you why dental crowns are used and whether you may benefit from this procedure.
What is a crown?
Sometimes referred to as a cap, this hollow restoration is designed to look just like the crown of a real tooth and it’s placed over and fully encapsulates a damaged or weakened tooth. Of course, each crown that you receive from our Billerica, MA, cosmetic dentist is custom made to fit your tooth and to blend right in with your smile.
Why is a crown placed?
There are many reasons why you might need or want a dental crown. While crowns tend to be restorative in nature they can sometimes offer cosmetic benefits, as well. The most common reason for a dental crown is to restore durability, strength and function back into a tooth that is damaged by an infection, severe decay or direct trauma.
A crown may also be placed over a tooth after root canal therapy or over a tooth that is severely worn down (often from years of teeth grinding). Of course, a crown may also be used primarily to improve the shape, size or overall appearance of a tooth. For example, if you have a tooth that is severely discolored or misshapen then a dental crown may quickly improve its overall look so that it doesn’t stand out from the rest of your smile.
A crown is also instrumental in tooth replacements. If you are faced with tooth loss and are considering either a dental bridge or dental implant, dental crowns will also be part of the process. A crown is cemented over a dental implant to replace a single tooth and two crowns are used to support a dental bridge and to hold it in place.
